FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is a Big Bang?
There are many different types of Big Bangs, all varying slightly, but generally a bigbang is a process in which authors write long fics (10,000 or 20,000 words) and artists make art/fanmixes for them.

How do I sign up?
If you're an author, you head over to the Author Sign Ups and sign up! If you're an artist, you head over to the Artist Sign Ups and sign up there!

Author Requirements

What are the requirements for my fic?
Your fic must be at least 10,000 words long and be classified under the fantasy genre. This can mean a lot of things: angels, demons, vampires, werewolves, faeries, &c. Anything goes here.

What genres/fandoms are allowed?
The only requirement is that it must be fantasy. Books, movies, poems, anything. Want to write a crossover? Go ahead. Original fiction is also allowed so long as, again, it's fantasy.

If I have more than one idea, can I write both?
As long as you think you'll be able to finish both by the deadline, go right ahead. If it comes down to having two incomplete fics or abandoning one and finishing the other, we ask that you please try to complete at least one.

Can I write a story with my friend?
Sure, go ahead!

Artist Requirements

What are the requirements for art?
You can make whatever kind of art you feel like, in whatever medium you choose—drawing, painting, digital art, photo manips, even regular photo shoots if you like. Since the authors will have three months to write, we ask that you put some time and effort into your art, to match the effort that the authors have put into this challenge.

What are the requirements for a mix?
Mixes must include at least five songs, though you should feel free to include more. Most mixers also include front and back art for a CD case and link to the songs (whether uploaded for download or just on youtube) but it's not required.

How do I know what I'm making art for?
After the authors turn in their rough drafts, the mods will make a claims post. We'll include a short summary, the pairing and fandom (if applicable) and any other information we think might be relevant. You can then post a comment choosing which story you'd like to make art for, and then that story is yours!

Ok, so how do I make a claim?
Claims are done on a first come, first serve basis. We will be putting up a post and the artists and fanmixers will reply to it with their first, second, and third choices. You will be assigned the first fic that is available within those choices.

What happens if the number of authors and artists don't match up?
We will do several rounds of claiming so that EVERY fic has both art and a mix in the event that fics outnumber artists and mixers. If it's the other way, we may open up the fics so that more than one artists or mixer is assigned to the same fic. Either way, everyone who wants to participate will get to participate.

If I'm a mixer and an artist, can I claim the same fic for both?
As long as the story is available on both claiming posts, yes. If not, it's ok to do art for a different story than you do for a mix. After all, that means you get to read two stories, not just one!

How will I get my art/mix to my author?
After the claiming, you will be provided with the contact information for your author.

Schedule

Author Sign Ups Open: June 5
Artist Sign Ups Open: June 5
Author Sign Ups Close: July 31
Rough Drafts Due: Sept. 30
Artist Claims Open: Oct. 5
Final Fics Due: Nov. 1
Posting Starts: Nov. 5

What should my rough draft look like?
Rough drafts should be at least 8,000 of the required 10,000 words. Whether it's finished and just needs to be edited (and added to) or is still missing the ending (or even the beginning, depending on how you write) is up to you. The point of the rough draft deadline is to make sure that you'll be able to make the final deadline for the finished fic.

Can I have an extension?
The mods will be evaluating requests for extensions on a case-by-case basis. We will do our best to be accommodating, but we would hope that you will use the time given you wisely.

Community Maintenance

So, do I join the community, or just watch it?
Go ahead an join. The community settings are currently set so that only the moderators can make posts, but that will change when it comes time to post. But for now, go ahead an join!

Posting Requirements

What are the requirements for me to post my story?
All stories (and art and mixes) should be posted to your personal journal and linked to in your post in this community. If your personal journal is friends locked, and you would prefer not to make even a single post unlocked, please talk with either your mixer or your artist and see if you can work something out. Otherwise, all posts should be made by the author and include links to the both the art and the mix.

Additionally, we ask that you include the header below. You should feel free to add to it if you think we're missing something (like a warning, or notes), but please make sure that you include all the information in the header.

Can I post my story on my journal early to show it to my friends?
No, the first post of your fic must be on the reveal day. If you are using a friend as a beta, please make arrangements for them to see your story privately (by friends filter, but preferably by email).

What do I do if my story is too big to go in a single post?
Most people choose to break up their story into two or more parts an then create a master post that links to all the parts, the art and the mix.

Where should I upload my art/mix?
There are several free sites such as Megaupload, Sendspace, or Mediafire that can be used for large files or songs. Tinypic is a good place for images or .gif files, as is Photobucket.

Misc. (including Drop Out rules)

What do I do if I have to drop out?
If you're dropping out, please email Sky-mod (cerulean.sky @ gmail.com) with the text below. No reasons needed if you don't want to provide them. We do ask that you drop out before the artist claiming opens, so that the artist doesn't waste their time on a story that won't end up being finished for the challenge.

I don't really want to use LJ for this, but I have a DW account...
You are in luck! There is already a DW mirror community for this, over here: Fantasy Big Bang. Please feel free to sign up there. When the time comes, the mods will provide all the instructions for how to go about posting your story or art.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to comment here!

Question

Hi! I'm kind of interested in this. It seems like a fun challenge but I have a question.

Slash I understand but what is gen/het?

Thank you.

Re: Question

Gen is a non-romantic story that is focused on the characters and the plot and not a romantic pairing.

Het is a story focused on a male/female (or heterosexual) pairing.

It should also be noted that more than one of these could apply, and you shouldn't feel restricted by them. You can choose to label your story how you like.

Hope you decide to join! :D

There is one thing that isn't clear in the schedule-- when do authors begin writing? Is it when sign-ups are closed? As soon as he/she signs up?

Go ahead and start writing as soon as you sign up. :D

I'm very intrigued. Would steampunk qualify as fantasy, or would there need to be more traditional fantasy elements like magic and supernatural beings?

[info]cerulean_sky

June 7 2010, 23:36:37 UTC 1 year ago

Hm. I don't know if I would technically classify steampunk as either fantasy or sci-fi really. I think it would be preferable to have some fantasy elements, but if you had steampunk and vampires for example (like those books by Gail Carriger), I'd rule for yes. It wouldn't have to be quite as overt as that if you didn't want, but we'd like some real fantasy elements in the story. I don't want to tell you what your story should be about, but I can imagine that there are some really neat ways to combine steampunk and magic. :D

I hope I didn't put you off the challenge!

If I wrote a au fic in a fandom that is not fantasy (High School Musical) that's sort of a crossover with The Last Unicorn, would that count?

[info]cerulean_sky

June 8 2010, 04:09:08 UTC 1 year ago

As long as the ending result story would be classified as fantasy, then yes.

I've got a question that's not addressed here. I was wondering about in progress books? I was thinking this might be good motivation for me to make it to ten thousand words, but I also know there's no possible way I could have the entire book completed the month after. Should I just do a short story within my book I do have a couple of ideas, or would it be acceptable to use the first ten thousand words here?

I also was wondering what about several short stories that aren't ten thousand words a piece, such as vignettes? I have several that need to be cleaned up and edited and this might provide the motivation I need. Would they be acceptable for this challenge? I'm trying to figure out what's allowable by the rules. :)

Let me know, I really would like to participate. :) I was linked to this community by [info]in_excelsis_dea one of your members.

We'd really like a complete story—beginning, middle and end. You should feel free to write in whatever universe you'd like, including one of your own, of course.

I hope that answered your question, and that it doesn't put you off the challenge!

~Debate, debate, debate~

Are we allowed to sign up for both author and artist? If so, could we claim our own fiction to be the artist of?

(If that makes no sense, sorry -- it is 2am here.)

[info]cerulean_sky

June 22 2010, 16:58:31 UTC 1 year ago

You can sign up to be an artist and an author, yes. But I am going to say no on claiming your own fic, just because this is sort of supposed to be about bringing people together to work together to create something.

I hope you're ok with that and will still sign up as an artist too. :D

I feel dumb for asking, but when you say the fic must be fantasy, does that mean the fandom itself has to be fantasy? I plan on making an fantasy au of the teen titans cartoon fandom see, but i'm not sure if that fits with the guidelines.

[info]cerulean_sky

June 24 2010, 15:21:36 UTC 1 year ago

I'm pretty sure a universe that includes super powers is sort of already fantasy. :D But a fantasy AU would fit too.

June 29 2010, 23:12:28 UTC 1 year ago

I just got a link to this from a friend and I had a question. I'm not sure how 'fantasy' you want these stories. I have something in mind that i've been working on and this would be a great reason to help me finish it. It's a modern day college AU in which there are rare (and secret) individuals that are dragons and people that are hunting them to extinction. Would this be fantasy enough to be allowed? I just don't want to sign up and commit to it and then find out it wasn't enough :P Thanks!!!

[info]cerulean_sky

June 29 2010, 23:22:28 UTC 1 year ago

That seems pretty fantasy to me! You have dragons. Come on. That's way fantasy. :P So yeah, go ahead!

Personally (in my own writing) I'd go so far as to say things that are set in fantasy worlds with no magic in them are still fantasy stories. I mean, the worlds don't exist, so they must be a fantasy, right? :D

Hmm... I have a fic that's been kicking around for almost two years, and this could be the jolt I need.

One important question though; I've written and published two sections of this fic in response to other challenges, both over a year ago. One is an epilogue that I can make 'optional' (I probably should, anyway; it's the only nc-17 part of the story), but I really would like to put the other in, even though it isn't a big deal fo the plot... neither have been posted on my LJ, for some reason or other. (Actually, i'm pretty sure that the epilogue only got sent on an email as a gift-fic. I can't even find the other piece, now!)

can I write this story for bigbang a) if I don't use those two already-written pieces (could I have links to them in my master post?) b) include them IF my fic makes the word limit without them?

[info]cerulean_sky

July 2 2010, 16:27:36 UTC 1 year ago

Absolutely! That sounds exactly like what I would have asked for. :D

Betas

Well, I seem to be kind of late to the party, but I guess I'll ask my question anyway :) It's about beta readers. Some bigbangs have beta reader signups, or other ways authors can find betas for their fic. Will this comm be doing something similar for people who don't already know someone to beta their fic, or are we expected to find betas on our own? Also, is a beta reader absolutely required, or is it ok (if we can't find one) for us to just do edits without one?

Thanks

[info]cerulean_sky

July 25 2010, 17:09:10 UTC 1 year ago

Re: Betas

I'm going to put out a call for betas in a couple communities that I'm a member of, probably closer to the date that rough drafts are due. You should feel free to find your own beta, but a beta will be required. And I'll probably offer to beta those who absolutely couldn't find someone, since I'm not writing in this challenge.

I was wondering. I signed up for original fic but I've recently got a fanfic idea that I think I might like to do instead. Is that alright? I've also got a friend or two interested in possibly signing up but they're having trouble deciding on original or fanfic too.

[info]cerulean_sky

July 29 2010, 21:10:39 UTC 1 year ago

You can keep changing up until rough drafts are due, if you want! (Though, hah, I wouldn't recommend it. ;))

Tell your friends to join up even if they haven't decided yet! So long as they can manage a rough draft when it's time, it's all good!

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but can we go over 10k? I ask because I'm still getting to the plot of my story and I'm already at 8,000. Is there a limit to how long it can be?

[info]cerulean_sky

August 13 2010, 15:35:28 UTC 1 year ago

I don't think I'm going to severely limit people. Feel free to go over 10k words. What I will say is that it should be able to be read in a reasonable amount of time by the artist. My guess is that this means not quite novel length?

Would an apocolypse fic be considered a fantasy fic?

[info]cerulean_sky

August 21 2010, 04:32:43 UTC 1 year ago

That is a good question! (And I thought you were writing about mermaids? :P)

I... guess apocalypse fic could be sort of fantasy and sort of not, depending on how you played it. Angels, demons, world ending because god decrees it? Definitely fantasy. But... 2012 sort of stuff? I... dunno if I would count that.

This hasn't been a good time for me to be writing (RL just went through the roof) but when I looked back at my original comment to say "Dropping out", it would not let me reply. Is it just my computer, or is there really no reply button on the comments in the Author Sign-ups?

P.S. I'd be glad to beta if you think you'll need some help and I can still be a mixer; I just have no real time to write anything decent.

[info]cerulean_sky

August 28 2010, 01:53:33 UTC 1 year ago

AHAHA. Ooops. I made it so no more comments could be added. I guess I'll have to figure out new drop out rules. But thanks for letting me know, I will take you off the list.

I will be making a beta sign up post soon, so keep your eye out for that, and maybe you'll join us in a later round!

I'm writing a story for this that's kind of the first part of a 5-part series. I'm doing a basic version for this, then I'm going to flesh it out quite a bit (probably ~15k for this, the final may be up to ~40k).

My issue is that I'm probably not going to make it look like a complete story in this part. Any possible way I can end it, the characters still clearly have a lot more to do. They won't have completed their goal, they're pretty much just beginning. This part covers the time when they go from wandering aimlessly with something they need to do but no idea how to do it, to when they start to get a direction of sorts, a specific list of places to go and things to get that will get them where they want to be. They haven't gotten those things to those places yet, but they at least now know they have to. That's where this part will end.

Is that okay, or should it be a totally-complete no-sequel-needed this-is-the-real-end thing?

[info]cerulean_sky

September 6 2010, 19:17:05 UTC 1 year ago

Is there any way you could make this the first "book" in a series? Like, give this part it's own complete arcs but also hint that there's more to come? I think that would be my way of going about it.

If there's just no way you can do that, then you'll just have to sign up for 5 successive FBBs and write all the parts! (J/k! ...maybe. ;))
